A dairyman that milks 2000 cows today and flawlessly manages his business and complys with all environmental regs is losing well over $100,000 a month due to the changes in feed costs alone, which account for half the cost of doing business...feeding the cows.
Many feed and farm loans are maxed out, similar to many of YOU who have underwater mortgages and overextended credit.
Smaller dairies have it much worse, and larger scale dairies, might blunt this somewhat with scale and more land ownership...if they own enough land to grow the majority of what they need to feed their cows.
This is uncommon, and many still buy off the market for a sizable amount of their needs.
The milk price changes much slower than the feed costs, and therein is part of the problem.
Then there are the destructive environmental regs put on the dairies, that add more costs without offsetting benefits, further driving them toward bankruptcy.
Just drive past Harris Ranch feedlot sometime, and you will see one ominous sign, a significant quantity of Holsteins, where in years past it was mostly beef cattle.
If any of you really understood the business, you would be silent, or much more respectful of your neighbors who provide your daily supply of food and jobs.
There are some in frisco and Sacramento, notably CARB, who silently cheer at these developments, and are happy to export jobs, food production and pollution to poorer countries, with inferior worker and environmental protections.
They are NOT your friends or friends of the environment.
They do like their ever increasing salaries and benefits, easily making over $100,000/year, inventing new things and sources to regulate...like CO2 now, but that is another problem, the carbon CON.
You can solve that problem by voting OUT every Backstabbing democrat and serve them their pink slip for a change, or at least voting in any New candidate from a farming family.
No more career parasites.
